What sets the price

  • Sail area. Price follows the size of the sail, which comes from your boat’s rig (I, J, P and E). A typical 44 footer carries about 44.6 m² of mainsail and 57.1 m² of 130% genoa.
  • Sailcloth. Both cloths are woven polyester (Dacron) from Dimension-Polyant, the German sailcloth maker. Optimum Cruise is the value choice for coastal and weekend cruising. C-Breeze is a tighter weave that resists stretch and holds its shape for longer, for sails that work hard or go offshore. At 44 ft we use Optimum Cruise 398 OC (9.9 oz) or C-Breeze 391 CB (9 oz).
  • Battens. Full battens (4) hold the sail’s shape and help it last. The 3 leech + 1 full head batten option costs a little less.
  • Genoa size. We make furling genoas from 110% to 150%. Most cruising boats carry about 130%; a smaller genoa costs less.
  • Build time. Standard is about 4 weeks. Express (about 2 weeks) adds 8%; economy (about 8 weeks) takes 5.5% off.

What’s included

Mainsail: cloth weight matched to your boat, two reef points with low-friction rings, cunningham, stacked reinforcement patches, Dyneema leech and foot lines, battens, sail bag and a 12-month warranty.

After you order, a sailmaker checks your measurements before anything is cut. If your numbers change the price, we tell you first and you can cancel for a full refund.

Questions

How much does a new mainsail cost for a 44 ft sailboat?

A made-to-measure cruising mainsail for a 44 ft sailboat costs about A$4,985 including GST (US$3,082) in Dimension-Polyant Optimum Cruise with full battens. A main with 3 leech battens and a full head batten costs a little less than one with 4 full battens.

How much does a new genoa cost for a 44 ft sailboat?

A 130% furling genoa for a 44 ft sailboat costs about A$5,603 including GST (US$3,464) in Optimum Cruise, or A$7,213 including GST (US$4,459) in C-Breeze. Most fall between A$4,663 and A$6,207 in Optimum Cruise. A 110% or 120% genoa costs less and a 140% or 150% costs more.

Why do sail prices vary between 44 ft boats?

Sail prices follow sail area, not boat length. A typical 44 ft boat carries about 44.6 m² of mainsail and 57.1 m² of 130% genoa, but a tall-rig or performance boat carries more, and a fractional rig has a bigger main and a smaller genoa. That is why we price every boat from its own rig dimensions (I, J, P and E).

What sailcloth weight does a 44 ft sailboat need?

We match the cloth weight to the boat's length using Dimension-Polyant's guide. For a 44 ft boat that is Optimum Cruise 398 OC (9.9 oz) or C-Breeze 391 CB (9 oz).
