A storm trysail for when the mainsail comes down and reefing further isn’t an option. It sets low and flat, keeping the boat balanced and steerable in heavy weather.
Built to World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations 4.26
- Area: no more than 17.5% of your mainsail luff (P) multiplied by its foot (E). Area ≤ 0.175 × P × E.
- No headboard and no battens, so it is simple to set and drop under load.
- High-visibility cloth: Challenge Storm Orange Dacron, cross-cut.
- Sail number and letters on both sides, as OSR 4.26 requires. Tell us your sail number with your order.
- Independent luff attachment: the trysail must not rely on the mainsail’s luff groove. Choose slides or slugs to suit your trysail track, or grommets only to lash the luff to the mast.
- On boats with in-mast furling, the trysail must be able to set while the mainsail stays furled.
Sizes
| Size | Luff | Leech | Foot | Area | Cloth | Min P × E for OSR | Slides fitted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 4.90 m | 5.75 m | 2.50 m | 6.1 m² | 325 g/m² | 34.9 m² | 10 |
| Medium | 5.50 m | 6.40 m | 2.85 m | 7.8 m² | 415 g/m² | 44.6 m² | 11 |
| Large | 6.40 m | 7.75 m | 3.40 m | 10.8 m² | 415 g/m² | 61.7 m² | 13 |
| Maxi | 7.80 m | 9.10 m | 4.00 m | 15.5 m² | 415 g/m² | 88.6 m² | 16 |
Choosing your size
Multiply your mainsail P by E (in metres) and multiply by 0.175. That is your maximum OSR trysail area. Pick the largest size whose area is at or below that figure. For example, P 12.0 m × E 4.0 m = 48 m², × 0.175 = 8.4 m², so the Medium (7.8 m²) is the right size.
Luff hardware
- Allslip slides (Bainbridge A109): fitted along the luff, about one every 0.5 m.
- Slugs (tell us your track size): fitted to suit your track, at no extra charge. Put your track size in the order notes.
- No slides – grommets only: luff grommets for lashing or for fitting your own slides.
